National Education for Women's Leadership (NEW Leadership™) is the centerpiece of CAWP's initiative to educate and empower the next generation of women leaders.
The NEW Leadership™ summer institute was developed by CAWP in 1991 as a national program, designed to encourage college women to take on public leadership roles. The NEW Leadership™ summer institute is a five day residential program during which college students learn about leadership and politics from successful women leaders.
Since 1995 the annual summer institute at CAWP has focused on New Jersey, bringing students and practitioners from across the state to discuss national and local policy issues. Participants are invited back to CAWP to attend special programs, speakers and workshops throughout the year.
NEW Leadership™ was named an "Exemplary Leadership Project" by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
Beginning in 1999, with a three year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, CAWP established the NEW Leadership™ Development Network, an initiative to bring NEW Leadership™ to college women in every region of the country. Today the New Leadership™ Development Network includes 15 partners serving 20 states.
