Eligibility

Any unit within a non-profit institution of higher education is eligible to become a partner, including, but not limited to, academic departments, student life offices, research organizations, and public service/leadership centers. In selecting partners, priority will be given to institutions in regions not currently represented in the Development Network. Institutions with a history of serving women of color are particularly encouraged to apply.

Benefits of Partnership

As a NLDN partner you will:

-Develop a partnership with CAWP, a leading authority in its field and one of the nation's premier university-based research and education centers on women and politics.

-Become part of a national network dedicated to educating and empowering the next generation of women leaders and expanding public leadership education opportunities for college women.

-Build networks with political women in the state and region, and other institutions interested in women's political leadership education.

-Benefit from CAWP's experience and expertise in hosting a program that has been shown to be effective in meeting its goals.

-Be invited to participate in special CAWP and NEW Leadership events, such as CAWP's 2001 Forum for Women State Legislators, and the Forum Fellowship Program for NEW Leadership alumni.

-Have access to NEW Leadership communications and resources, including the NLDN listserve, NEW Leadership alumni lists, and CAWP's contacts with women public officials, political leaders, and workshop trainers.

NLDN partners agree to:

-Send two representatives to participate in a NEW Leadership Program Development Institute, which includes a one day partner orientation session, and participation in the NEW Leadership summer institute with special partner sessions on fund raising, curriculum, program planning and staffing.

-Establish a public leadership education program for undergraduate women in the partner's state or region which will incorporate the six point NEW Leadership curriculum. Programs should strive to include a minimum of 25 students.

-Submit a written plan of action for fund raising and for their NEW Leadership program by the end of the calendar year.

-Raise the necessary funds to support the program (approximately $30,000 to $60,000 per year, depending on the type of program and staffing arrangements).

-Conduct an evaluation of their program, utilizing questions developed by CAWP and used by all the partners, and submit a self-evaluation report of their NEW Leadership program by the end of the calendar year in which the program takes place.

CAWP agrees to:

-Provide a program development manual for each member of the partner team, which includes detailed information about the NEW Leadership program, including mission statement, descriptions of sessions and sample materials such as applications, recruitment letters, planning schedule and sample budgets.

-Providing ongoing consultation with partners about issues related to first year program development.

-Make a NEW Leadership staff member available to attend each partner's inaugural program, to provide on-site troubleshooting, help facilitate program sessions, and review the program with partner staff.

-Include partner institutions in all NLDN programming events and NEW Leadership publications, such as the CAWP newsletter, NEW Leadership brochure, and NEW Leadership website.

Partner Criteria

CAWP is seeking partners for the NEW Leadership Development Network that demonstrate:

-experience developing programs that meet the distinctive needs of women students;

-a commitment to women's political leadership education programming, and building partnerships with other institutions and political women in the state or region;

-a commitment to recruiting participants and speakers who are diverse in race, ethnicity, political ideology, and sexual orientation;
