National Education for Women's Leadership is the centerpiece of CAWP's initiative to educate and empower the next generation of women leaders.

NEW Leadership was named an "Exemplary Leadership Project" by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Since the inception of NEW Leadership, CAWP has developed and refined a set of resources and programs designed to encourage college women to take on public leadership roles.

The NEW Leadership summer institute began in 1991 as national program. The institute consists of a week long residential program during which college students learn about women's leadership and women's political participation from scholars and practitioners. NEW Leadership participants are invited back to CAWP to attend special programs, speakers and workshops throughout the year. Since 1995 the annual summer institute at CAWP has focused on NEW Jersey, bringing students and practitioners from across the state to discuss national and local policy issues.

Additional summer institutes were conducted as regional programs in 1997 and 1998 as NEW Leadership South and NEW Leadership Midwest.

Beginning in 1998, with a three year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, CAWP has been developing partnerships with colleges and universities across the country to create the NEW Leadership Development Network, an initiative to bring NEW Leadership to college women in every region of the country.

Currently, we have partnerships with eleven schools to develop NEW Leadership programs across the country. In the summer of 2004 NEW Leadership summer institutes will be hosted in Alabama, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington and Washington D.C. CAWP is continuing to work with centers and institutions interested in bringing NEW Leadership to their state.
