Preparing
the next generation of women leaders and shaping leadership
that breaks the mold of "politics as usual" is central
to the mission of CAWP. Although women are 52% of the voting
population, they are significantly under represented in our
nation's policy making bodies. In 2003, women held only 22.3%
of the state legislative seats, 14% of the seats in the U.S.
Senate and 13.6% of the seats in the House of Representatives.
Only six women serve as governors. These numbers are indicative
of the problems that women face in all levels of political involvement.
CAWP's
research indicates that women bring different perspectives,
experiences and priorities to public life. Equality, justice
and a commitment to democracy dictate that more women should
be present when and where important political decisions are
being made. NEW Leadership is designed to increase the representation
of women in our national, state and local decision making bodies,
by educating and empowering college women to take on public
leadership roles.
